Description
Chesters, located between the 27th and 28th milecastles, is one of the best-preserved examples of a cavalry fort. Many parts are still visible, including the barracks and a finely preserved bath house.

So much is known about this early fort because of the pioneering archaeological work of John Clayton, who inherited the local estate in 1832.

The museum, which was built in 1896 soon after his death, houses the important Clayton Collection of altars and sculptures from all along Hadrian’s Wall.
