Description
Set in the heart of the Cheshire countryside Adlington Hall is one of England’s most beautiful country houses. It has been the ancestral home of the ancient and noble family of Legh from 1315 to the present day. Originally built on the site of a hunting lodge, which stood in the forest of Macclesfield (in 1040), features include both Medieval and Tudor architecture. Additional wings and rooms have been added over the centuries.

The main elements include The Great Hall (constructed 1480 - 1505), the 'black & white' Tudor Manor (1581) and the Georgian South Front and West Wing (built 1749 - 1757). Supported at its eastern end by two oak trees from the original hunting lodge, The Great Hall is notable for its breathtaking hammer beam roof and its magnificent 17th Century organ which was played by the world famous composer Handel.

The Great Hall

Equally impressive are the extensive gardens designed in the Rococo style providing a fascinating step back to a flamboyant and sensual period of English Garden Design. A number of original features survive including a Lime Avenue planted in 1688, a splendid folly ‘Temple to Diana’ and Shell Cottage. More recent additions include a beautiful Father Tiber water garden and impressive laburnum arcade which creates a grand entrance to the rose garden and maze beyond.

Further afield, the Adlington Hall Estate extends to some 2,000 acres incorporating open countryside, woodland, lake and a quarry which is one of the best off-road driving courses in the north of England. With a rare combination of qualities Adlington Hall and the Adlington Hall Estate offer an ideal venue for events including corporate entertainment, product launches, business meetings, outdoor pursuits and seminars. More information is available on its excellent and comprehensive Website.
