Description
The Assembly Rooms in Bath are open to the public daily and are also popular for dinners, dances, concerts and conferences. Originally known as the Upper Rooms, they were designed by John Wood the Younger and opened in 1771.

The magnificent interior consists of a splendid Ball Room, Tea Room and Card Room, connected by two fine octagonal rooms. This plan was perfect for “assemblies”, evening entertainments popular in the 18th century, which included dancing, music, card-playing and tea-drinking.

The building houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of fashionable dress in the country, the Fashion Museum. Its extensive displays cover the history of fashion from the late 16th century. Hand-held audioguides allow visitors to learn about the fashions on display while keeping lighting to levels suitable for fragile garments.

The “Dress of the Year” collection traces significant moments in fashion history from 1963 to the present day. For the serious student of fashion, the reference library and study facilities of the nearby Fashion Research Centre are available by appointment. Special displays for 2008/9: 'Dresses from History', '1977' until 4th January 2009, '17th century Gloves', 'Bill Gibb: a personal journey' from 17th October 2008 to October 2009.

The Assembly Rooms were built for entertainment and socialising and are just as well suited to this purpose as they ever were. Entering through the red-carpeted foyer, guests reach a suite of interconnected rooms that are ideal for entertaining large numbers of people at concerts, exhibitions, conferences, dinners or weddings.
