This Renaissance-style chateau is set within a magnificent garden, an ensemble created by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the 1870s for his house parties. The unique collection of 18th-century French objects includes buttons, gold boxes, cabinets, carpets and porcelain.
There are 18th-century English faces in the magnificent Gainsborough portraits, as well as paintings by Bakst. The gardens are famous for their views over the Vale of Aylesbury, and for sculpture, specimen trees, a colourful parterre and striking displays of seasonal bulbs and bedding plants.
The rococo revival aviary houses breeding pairs of exotic birds, and the wine cellars contain thousands of bottles of vintage Rothschild wines. Since 1996 Waddesdon has won many awards for its immaculate restoration and for the quality of its shops and visitor services.
Note: In order to enjoy Waddesdon to the full, visitors should allow at least one and a half hours to tour the house and another hour for the garden. Last recommended admission to the house 2.30 pm.
