Description
Created by Lionel de Rothschild in the 1920s, the Gardens are a stunning vision of his inspiration, offering 200-acres of natural beauty & horticultural variety. The Gardens are host to many rare & venerable species, and they continue to evolve under the careful direction of Lionel’s sons, Edmund and Leopold.
Exbury reflects the changing moods of nature. Early spring sees the magnolias and camellias burst into flower, whilst the Daffodil Meadow is a carpet of vibrant gold. In mid-spring the rhododendrons and azaleas are at their peak & full of vibrant colour. The full bloom of the Rose Garden & Herbaceous Gardens announces the arrival of summer. Autumn follows bringing spectacular displays of colour from the Japanese maples, deciduous azaleas & dogwoods that flourish.
The newly opened narrow gauge steam railway takes visitors on a magical journey around the northeast corner of the Gardens and through the Summer Lane Garden planted with bulbs, herbaceous perennials and grasses. The journey lasts 20 minutes & includes a bridge, tunnel, viaduct & ‘Exbury North’ halt. You can view further information on their excellent and very comprehensive
Website.

Autumn at Exbury:
Autumn at Exbury is a very special time of year. Whilst Spring is colourful with the blooms of the Rothschild Collection, autumn brings the deep russets of the maples, acers and dogwoods which flourish. A special trail will lead visitors around the garden to the best of the colour - not that you have to look too hard!
On still days there are wonderful reflections in the many ponds and cascades through the Estate. Colourful displays can also be seen under cover - throughout October the Exbury Five Arrows Gallery in the gardens plays host to an exhibition of nerines - "jewel-lilies", and visitors will be able to judge for their favourite in a "beauty competition."
