Description
Since 1745 Corsham Court has been the home of the Methuen family, it is based on an Elizabethan house dating from 1582. It was bought by Paul Methuen to house a collection of C16th/C17th paintings and, after alterations to the house in 19th century more Italian Old Masters and works of art were added.
The surviving collection includes works by Van Dyck and Carlo Dolci which hang alongside family portraits by Reynolds. The Picture Gallery was designed as a triple cube and boasts a rare ornate ceiling attributed to Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.
Brown and Humphry Repton were responsible for the beautiful setting. They laid out avenues and planted the Specimen Trees including the magnificent Oriental Plane. Brown also built the Gothic Bath House (which was later modified by Nash) and planned a 13 acre lake completed by Repton some 40 years later. Do visit their
Website for more Images and details on how to get there.
