Description
Nostell Priory, one of Yorkshire's finest jewels, has benefited from substantial building works, redecoration and upgrading. The present house is an 18th-century architectural masterpiece by James Paine built on the site of a medieval priory for Sir Rowland Winn, 4th baronet in 1733. Later Robert Adam was commissioned to complete the state rooms which are among the finest examples of his interiors.

The Priory houses one of England's finest collections of Chippendale furniture, designed specially for the house by the great cabinetmaker who was once apprentice on the estate. Nostell Priory's other treasures include an oustanding art collection with works by Pieter Breughel the younger and Angelica Kaufmann and the remarkable 18th-century dolls’ house, complete with its original fittings and Chippendale furniture. In the grounds are delightful lakeside walks with a stunning collection of rhododendrons and azaleas in late spring.

Review by Kevin Matthews, 12/09/2005

I have visited Nostell Priory on many occasions, having previously worked there in the 80's and early 90's. Nostell is - and perhaps I am biased - a beautiful house and the National Trust have to be c...
