Description
George Gilbert Scott conceived his Memorial to Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert the Prince Consort, as a gigantic bejewelled shrine protecting the gilt bronze sculpture of the Prince. Scott’s vision far outstripped the technology of the time and by the 1990s the various materials – cast iron, lead, bronze, glass, mosaics and stone – were suffering severe structural problems.
In 1994 English Heritage embarked upon one of its most ambitious conservation projects ever – to strip the Memorial back to its cast-iron core, conserve every element, and rebuild it. The restoration was completed a year ahead of schedule and the Memorial was reopened by Her Majesty the Queen on 21 October 1998
Damage from World War II was also repaired, and the opportunity was taken to replace some of the gilding removed during World War I – including that on John Foley’s stunning sculpture of the Prince which gives full meaning once again to Scott’s vision.
The Albert Memorial is managed by The Royal Parks Agency.
